NORTH ADAMS, MASS—Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) senior art students will launch their website exhibition, “Masked Voices: Disclosing Inception” online on December 7, 2020, followed by an online reception and artist talks from 1-1:30 p.m. on Dec. 11. The exhibition will feature artists Liz Brick, Zoe Villane, and Tanner Parrino, all members of the MCLA Class of 2020.
Each artist’s individual work spans a variety of themes and mediums. Themes range from emotive abstract imagery to world building. The artists’ chosen media are varied as well, including charcoal drawings, digital illustration, and narrative miniature sculpture. Yet the artists, and the work they are presenting in “Masked Voices,” connect back to each other through the common theme of communication suggested by the exhibition title.
“Conceptually, my work fits in the title; my form and focus stems from my experiences in quarantine and being isolated in the mountains hiking. The three of us all are building some sort of world, even if mine is a little abstraction than a place with concrete characters,” said Brick about her work and how it aligns with the other artists.
“This exhibit has been a great learning process for me and has helped me work out a multitude of aspects related to my work,” said Parino.
“The unique community, history, architecture and unique natures of North Adams have enthused and inspired my work for over a decade,” said Villane.
The exhibition, held each semester, has traditionally offered seniors the chance to share their hard work with the wider community and allowed them to show how MCLA has contributed to their growth as artists. Though the COVID-19 pandemic has impeded their ability to hold an in-person gallery opening, the students and their professors want to make sure they are able to continue to uphold this important tradition.
This exhibition is the final event for MCLA art majors, and while traditionally held at the college’s gallery, MCLA Gallery 51, the students worked together with their professors to create a virtual experience.
