"The future of life sciences is here in Massachusetts. We have the talent. We have the entrepreneurial spirit. Now let's seize the future." - Former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, October 4, 2013
The Feigenbaum Center for Science and Innovation at MCLA prepares students to enter the research pipeline and the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) workforce. Completed in 2013, the Center features state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories, research and presentation spaces, a greenhouse, a photovoltaic solar array, a rooftop classroom and outdoor instruction areas.
The 65,000-square-foot Center provides a space to foster integrated, research-intensive curricula and hands-on discovery, acts as a regional science resource center for the community, K-12 educators and students, and the community college, and offers state-of-the-art laboratory, teaching, office, and meeting spaces.
The Center is also a central location for MCLA's STEM programs. The demand for educated workers in the fields of biotechnology, nanotechnology, engineering and health care have reached an all-time high, and a third of MCLA students major in a STEM field. MCLA is dedicated to contributing to the development of a robust pipeline of talent to ensure Massachusetts retains its position as a leader in scientific innovation and research.
The Center is named for Dr. Armand V. Feigenbaum and his brother, Donald S. Feigenbaum, who founded and led the General System Company, a worldwide leader in the field of Total Quality Management. The Feigenbaum Foundation’s $5 million pledge—the largest in the College's history—established a new endowed fund that focuses on innovation and leadership.
In September 2016, MCLA announced that the Center was awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED certification is awarded based on grading in the following categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation and design.
