History Major Description and Requirements

We offer a four-year program leading to a Bachelor of Arts in History. Following completion of foundation courses, you can pursue different fields of history depending on your intellectual and career interests.

Foundation Courses (24 credits)

• Pre-Modern Civilization (HIST 103)
• Modern World Civilization (HIST 104)
• Introduction to History Major Seminar (HIST 110)
• United States History to 1877 (HIST 113)
• United States History after 1877 (HIST 114)
• Historical Methods and Theory (HIST 290)
• US Government (POSC 201)
• or Comparative Government (POSC 202)
• Choose two* from the following:
• Reformers, Rebels, & Revolutionaries in E Asia (HIST 220)
• War, Science, & Society (HIST 230)
• Reacting to the Past (HIST 240)
• Museums, Monuments & Memory (HIST 250)
• Superheroes & American Society (HIST 260)

Junior-Level Requirements (12 credits)**

• Topics in European History (HIST 305)
• Topics in Asian History (HIST 310)
• Topics in United States History (HIST 320)
• Topics in Latin American History (HIST 330)
• Topics in the History of the Middle East and the Muslim World (HIST 340)
• Topics in African History (HIST 350)
• Practicing History (HIST 360)

Senior-Level Requirements 

• Career and ePortfolio Workshop (HIST 450) 1 credit
• Two 400-level seminars chosen from:
• Seminar in Historical Periods (HIST 401)
• Seminar in Issues in History (HIST 403)

One of the following:

• One additional 400-level seminar
• Senior Thesis (HIST 405)
• Internship in History (HIST 540)

*History majors pursuing education licensure may substitute POSC 201 or POSC 202 for one of these courses
** No more than one course from each region can count towards this requirement

History Minor Description and Requirements

The History minor offers students the opportunity to study in moderate depth and breadth history as it reflects the development of political, economic, cultural and social institutions.

The flexibility of this minor allows you to choose the topics or areas that most interest you. We have extensive offerings in the histories of Asia, Europe, and the United States, with additional courses in Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Requirements: Select six History courses, four (4) of which must be 300 level or above.

Total Credits for a Minor in History: 18

Public History Minor Description and Requirements

The new minor in Public History provides students with knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience that can be used as preparation for a variety of careers in public history such as local, state, and national historic sites, archives, and museums.

HIST 360 Practicing History
HIST 540 Internship in History OR
AMGT 540 Internship in Arts & Culture

*History majors must choose at least two AMGT courses and Arts Management majors must choose two HIST courses

Courses used to fulfill the Public History minor cannot be counted towards a minor in Arts Management or History.
