MCLA STEM Academy for Incoming First-Year Students Begins July 28

7/10/19
NORTH ADAMS, MASS. — Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts will welcome incoming first-year students this month to STEM Academy, a summer program designed to provide a preview of the college experience and opportunities to make friends before the fall semester begins.

STEM Academy is for incoming first-year students who are majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math-related fields or who have indicated interest in majoring in those fields in the future. The five-day program will introduce incoming first-years to careers in STEM areas, build connections to other STEM students, faculty, and staff, and provide students with a foundation as they start their academic career at MCLA.

From July 28-Aug. 1, students will get accustomed to campus via hands-on learning in the College’s various academic spaces. They’ll get introductions to biology, computer science, environmental studies, psychology, math, chemistry, physics, and health sciences from MCLA professors and students, and also will take trips to Berkshire landmarks and meet with local STEM professionals. They will also learn about college life in general and meet with staff members who will connect them with various resources offered to students at MCLA.

Students will also work with STEM Academy Fellows, current MCLA students who are majoring in STEM fields, on skills they’ll need to be successful, such as time management and organization, as well as ways to help them study and be prepared for classes.

There is still time to apply if you are an incoming MCLA student. STEM Academy accepts up to 20 incoming freshmen who are enrolled in a STEM major or have expressed interest in STEM fields. For more information, visit www.mcla.edu/stemacademy or email Dr. Carolyn Dehner at carolyn.dehner@mcla.edu.
