As a teacher of creative writing, I am primarily interested in helping students to
find and develop their own voices and discover the best format for putting their stories
on the page. This involves some experimentation with different forms of genre and
prose, including exploring the territory between "Fiction" and "Nonfiction" with "Autofiction,"
and thinking about why and how to write in some of the genres that are often appealing
to students: contemporary (commercial or literary), speculative, and magical realist.
In addition to having published my first novel, The Hungry Ghost, in 2019, I am at
work on a new novella based around contemporary relationships that I am currently
calling "Intimate Traps," and I am working on a joint novel project with my husband,
Jason Storm, on a magical realist novel set in a fictional trailer park in Washington
state, called "Kingwood."
