Course Summary

Florida has a rich history, diverse ecology, and dynamic present. This field trip lets you explore the historical and contemporary interactions of people with their environment. We consider the human history (including Indians, Spanish, and US colonists) and the historical and modern ways in which people have altered and existed in Florida's environment.

During site visits to preserves and natural areas, you experience and learn about the ecology, characteristic species, natural communities, and ecosystems  of Florida. Camping in state and national parks broadens your experience. On-site presentations deepen your understanding of the modern conservation  issues confronting Florida today, including: agricultural practices, development  pressures,Everglades management,  threatened and endangered species  management, and water conservation. Visits  to diverse cultural and historical sites provide context for today's issues.

Cost of trip: 
All costs associated with the trip are included in the additional course fee. You will not need to bring any cash or money except for sodas and junk food at pit stops, souvenirs, and any airport food. I have been very conservative in budgeting so overages are unlikely, but still possible. Any underage will be refunded to the student after the trip.

This course requires online academic work during fall semester.  In January, during our field trip to the Everglades and South Florida we will visit a variety of natural areas, tour significant sites in the environmental history of South Florida and meet working professionals in the area of environmental research and conservation. After long days in the field, we will spend nights enjoying the sounds of the nocturnal wildlife while camping in national parks like the Everglades and Big Cypress and state parks like Kissimmee Prairie Preserve.
