As a second-language instructor and discipline-specific educator, I must choose from a myriad of pedagogical theories and teaching methodologies and apply them to individual learning styles and class dynamics. My teaching objectives are twofold: to provide students with the tools to engage in interpersonal communication in the target language and to offer contextual and theoretical frameworks to critically approach socio-cultural expressions.
Like my teaching, my academic background and research interests demonstrate a commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship by engaging with current and pressing topics within race, gender, and trans-nationality. My dissertation, Leaders and Multitudes in Latin America: the Venezuelan Case, examines the relationship between popular leaders and national communities in both historical novels and their cinematographic adaptations. In my ongoing research, I focus on representations of Afro-Latin religions in U.S. Latino/a literature and visual arts. Currently, I am interested in the representation of Afro-Caribbean religions in Latinx literature and film.
