December 2, 2022
Join artist and MCLA Professor Melanie Mowinski at her studio in Greylock Works on Saturday, Dec. 10, and Sunday, Dec. 11, from 11 a.m -2 p.m. for a peek into the processes that form her book “Collage Your Life.” The events are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
“Collage Your Life” evolved out of Mowinski’s daily collage practice during Advent, the Christian season of preparation leading up to Christmas.
Mowinski’s fascination with calendars – particularly Advent calendars – led her to create a collage-a-day Advent calendar in 2012. She paired each collage with a mantra statement and reflective writing that she posted to her blog. These blog posts were pep talks about creative practice and strategies for moving through the stress of the holidays.
That first year provided her much comfort and joy during the busy holiday season, so she decided to keep on with the practice for years following, until it became a December tradition. Nearly 10 years later the writing became the foundation of her book “Collage Your Life.”
In “Collage Your Life” Mowinski teaches a variety of core techniques and provides dozens of prompts to jumpstart the creative process and encourage makers to explore the versatility of collage. Inspiring examples of the author's work along with that of other collage artists are featured throughout.
Melanie Mowinski is a professor of art at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. She holds an MFA from the University of the Arts and an MAR in Religion and the Visual Arts from Yale University. She has maintained a daily practice of collage and creating with paper for more than 10 years.
