NORTH ADAMS, MASS. — Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) announces it will
host this year’s National Girls and Women in Sports Day event from 8:30 a.m. to 3
p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, in the James T. Amsler Campus Center Gym, on the second
floor of the Center.
Each year, the Trailblazers and the Department of Athletics invites girls and women
to participate in various clinics to promote sport. This event, in its 30th year at
MCLA, is open to the public and free to girls, $5 for women. Those interested are
encouraged to register now, at http://athletics.mcla.edu/information/NGWSD/NGWSD.
The day will begin with a group photo, before the girls participate in a basketball
clinic in the gym. At 10 a.m, they will move on to a softball clinic, to be followed
by a lacrosse clinic, before attending a free lunch to be held in Murdock Hall, room
218.
Women will go to the Venable Gym, where they will participate in a pickleball clinic,
to be followed by lunch in Murdock Hall, in the Fitzpatrick room on the second floor.
All participants then are invited to watch the MCLA women’s basketball game when the
Trailblazers compete against Worcester State University in the Campus Center Gym,
1-3 p.m. This event is free NGWSD participants. The game will be followed by an autograph
session with the MCLA women’s basketball team in the Sullivan Lounge, in the Campus
Center.
Parents should pick up their daughters at 3:15 p.m.

may register at 8:15 a.m. in person in the foyer on the second floor of the Campus
Center. Please note that there will be a $5 fee for women when they check in.
NGWSD is celebrated in all 50 states with community-based events, award ceremonies
and activities honoring the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and
women in sports. It began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo
Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women’s sports.
Hyman died of Marfan’s Syndrome in 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament
in Japan. Since that time, NGWSD has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and
recognize sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation, and
the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.
NGWSD is jointly organized by the National Girls and Women in Sport Coalition. The
Coalition combines the experience and resources of four premiere girls- and women-serving
organizations in the United States: Girls Incorporated, the National Association for
Girls and Women in Sport, National Women’s Law Center and the Women’s Sports Foundation.
